Amigurumi patterns for all skill levels!

Amigurumi is a lot simpler than you might think. But it’s normal for beginners to feel unsure where to start. I know the feeling. I still remember when I first started!

My first ever projects were small amigurumi octopi keychains and a cute teddy bear.

If you’ve been wanting to learn amigurumi, you’re in the right place! We have a list of beginner-friendly free amigurumi crochet patterns just for you.

Intro to the World of Amigurumi!

Congratulations on discovering the magical (and slightly wacky) world of amigurumi! You can let your imagination run wild, anything is possible. The best part about amigurumi is that you can follow a pattern or freestyle shapes as you wish! Changing the colors, or the yarn size can make a big difference to the finished project.

But where should you start?

Don’t worry, this list starts with the simplest (and cutest) beginner-friendly patterns to more complicated — yet still beginner-friendly — ones too!

What You Need for Amigurumi Patterns

Amigurumi is a little different from the usual crochet projects you make. So there are a few important materials that you should definitely have on hand!

  • Crochet Hooks – The first thing you need to follow free amigurumi crochet patterns is a crochet hook! You can find the right crochet hook size in your yarn band’s description or from the recommended hook section of your amigurumi patterns! Pro tip: try using a metal crochet hook to make it easier to slide the stitches off the hook and make a super tight fabric.
  • Yarn – Make sure to check the pattern to see what yarn weight to use. Each pattern should list a recommended brand or weight in the “suggested yarn” section of the pattern you’re following! You can make sure you have the right weight by checking the yarn band. Pay attention to what fiber type the pattern calls for too!
  • Scissors – A pair of scissors is another important tool that you will use for all of your knitting projects. You’ll need them to cut the yarn and trim any leftover yarn tails when you’re done!
  • Stitch markers – You might need stitch markers to keep track of where you are. This is especially helpful when placing things like arms or ears. If you don’t have stitch markers, you can use a strand of scrap yarn—preferably in a different color so it’s easy to see. For crochet patterns make sure to use “locking stitch markers” and not solid ones!
  • Yarn/darning needle – You will need a yarn needle or darning needle to sew in the loose ends.
  • Safety eyes or noses – Amigurumi need eyes too! So you’ll need a couple of safety eyes (or buttons!) and sometimes noses to complete your amigurumi’s super cute face.
  • Free amigurumi crochet patterns – Lastly, you will need free crochet animal patterns to work with. Read on!
