LET’S START KNITTING

The Lovely Crochet Moss Stitch in 3 Quick Rows

The crochet moss stitch, also called the linen stitch, is an easy crochet stitch that looks almost identical to the knitted linen stitch. This moss crochet stitch is made by alternating single crochets and chain stitches. Easy, right?

If you’re a crochet beginner, you’re going to LOVE this stitch. All you’ll be making are the super basic single crochets and chain stitches. Nothing more, nothing less.

So grab your hooks and a super chunky ball of yarn. Let’s get stitching!

IMPORTANT:

If you’re a beginner, feel free to use cheaper yarns. You’ll feel less bad messing up and “ruining” the look of the yarn while you master your new stitches!

The Lovely Crochet Moss Stitch in 3 Quick Rows

The crochet moss stitch is pretty much made up with 3 main rows: row 1 is the foundation row or starting row, and rows 2 and 3 are the “repeats”, or the rows that you will alternate between until the end of your project.

The Crochet Moss Stitch Pattern

Row 1

We’re taking ROW 1 piece-by-piece so you can have a closer look on how the moss crochet stitch is made.

Chain an even number of stitches. For this tutorial, I’ll be chaining 16.

Single crochet in the 4th chain from the hook…

Ch 1, skip the next chain…

Sc into the chain right next to the chain you skipped over..

Repeat *sc, ch 1, skip, sc* until you reach the end of the row.

Row 2

Chain 2, turn your work.

Important Reminders:

  • From row 2 onwards, you will always “CH 2” (chain 2) at the very start of every new row.
  • From row 2 onwards, you will always “SC” (single crochet) inside the “CH SP” (chain spaces).
  • You will always make a “CH 1” (chain 1) in between every “SC” (single crochet) you make.
  • Your last “SC” of the row will always be on the very top of the previous row’s “CH 2” (chain 2).

Sc in the chain 1 space from the previous row…

Ch 1, skip the sc underneath, sc in the chain 1 space from the previous row..

*Sc in the ch sp, ch 1, skip the sc in the previous row, sc in the ch sp*. Repeat everything inside the * * until the end of the row.

Row 3

Row 3 is basically just a repeat of row 2.

Ch 2, turn. *sc in the ch 1 sp, ch 1, sk the sc in the previous row, sc in the next ch 1 space* until the end of the row.
Just repeat Rows  2 and 3 until your project reaches the length you need!
