LET’S START KNITTING

3 Cheap Yarn Storage Ideas for Small Spaces

If you’re a multi-passionate crafter like me, you probably have a growing mountain of yarn in your hobby nook. As much as we love our fibers, the clutter can be too much to look at.

So let’s tidy things up, shall we?

But WHAT exactly is the best way to store yarn? Are there special techniques for yarn storage? Let’s talk about it!

My Favorite Yarn Storage Ideas that Don’t Break the Bank

There’s no such thing as a single best way to store yarn. Pretty much all the yarn storage ideas in this blog keeps your space neat and tidy. You just have to choose the best way to store yarn for you!

Caking

You want your yarn to be as easy to keep as possible. I found that turning your skeins into cakes make them so much easier to stack and sort.

All you’ll need is a yarn winder from Amazon.

Once you have your cake, you can easily stack and group them according to the material, yarn weight, color, or whatever works for you.

Shelves and Cubbies

The next yarn storage idea is to have them out on display using shelves and cubby holes.

Over-consumption is a thing, especially in the crafting community. The best way to yarn and avoid overbuying is to put some of your yarn on display. This way, you can see all the colors, brands, and fibers you already have on hand.

You’ll be less likely to purchase skeins that you don’t need, you avoid overconsumption, and you can use the money you saved to buy the expensive fibers that you love.

There are great-quality shelves that you can upcycle off of Facebook marketplace, yard sales, and the like.

Your local Home Depot or Ikea probably has a few shelves that fit your price range too. So make sure to check those out.

See-Through Containers

What about the yarn that can’t fit into your cubbies or shelves?

Let’s face it, we crafters tend to hoard way too much yarn than our regular storage can handle. Translucent containers are a life-saver when it comes to this.

You can put your yarn away while you use up the ones you have on display and you can still see the colors you have in case you need to replenish your shelves.

These solid containers also keep your fibers safe from dirt, moths, mold, and other nasty things that could cause damage to your yarn.

Your local malls probably have a few great deals on these yarn storage containers. So keep your eyes peeled for them!

What did you think about these yarn storage ideas for small spaces?

I personally don’t think that there is a single best yarn storage solution. Each method we talked about all equally solve our “yarn monster” problems without costing an arm and a leg.

In fact, I’m using all three yarn storage solutions as we speak! I have yarn skeins that I turned into cakes so I can stack them better, I have a couple on shelves to add color to my room, and some that are safely stashed away in 50-liter transparent containers to keep them safe and sound.
