“Asheville is a quick to knit, seamless top down cardigan. The chunky gauge is achieved by knitting with one strand of heavy worsted yarn and a strand of fingering hand-dyed yarn held together. The knit super bulky sweater patterns we picked today have a few things in common that make them particularly easy, beginner-friendly projects! Read on to learn about some knit-specific terms that will help you pick similar projects on your own!
Most of these patterns feature raglan sleeves, the simplest way to make sweater sleeves!
“Raglan” sleeves are knit at the same time as the body of the sweater and use increases or decreases to form a line angling from armpit to neck. A great example is the 1413-15 Raglan Sweater pattern.
Raglan projects use fewer seams (no sewing sleeves here!) which makes them especially beginner-friendly.
Another easy shape for beginner knitters is the “drop shoulder” sleeve style.
These sweaters are made using a few basic square shapes that are sewn together easily at the end. No complicated or fiddly curves here!
You can see in the Simple Knit Sweater pattern photos that the sleeve joins to the body of the sweater lower down from the shoulder thus the “drop shoulder” name!
These super bulky sweater patterns use some of the basic beginner skills we’ve covered in our tutorials!
The Simple Knit Sweater, 1413-15 Raglan Pullover, and Ashevile patterns showcase the super squishy garter stitch! You can read our tutorial and see our video for how to knit garter stitch here.
Stumped by stockinette stitch? We’ve got a tutorial for that too! Once you’ve got the hang of it you can knit all of the other sweaters in this list.
Happy knitting!
