A Whole New Way of Knitting Blankets!

We’ve seen people knit blankets using knitting needles of various sizes. We’ve even seen videos on how to arm knit a chunky throw. But not many talk about knitting loom blankets! You might think they’re just too big to knit easily on a knitting loom.

Today we’ll tell you how to make blankets on a knitting loom two different ways!

What You Need for Knitting Loom Blanket Patterns

Loom knitting is a quirky craft. Despite the name, you won’t be using knitting needles. Let’s go over the basic tools needed to make a basic loom knitting blanket:

  • Knitting looms – You need the right type of knitting loom in order to create your loom knit blanket. Make sure to check your loom knitting pattern’s list of materials for the suggested loom type and measurements!
  • Yarn – Loom knit blanket patterns often have their own yarn suggestions, so make sure to check those out too in the “recommended yarn” section! Pay attention to the yarn weight and suggested fiber type if you’re going to choose a different yarn than what the designer recommends.
  • Scissors – A pair of scissors is another important tool that you will use for all of your knitting projects. You’ll need them to cut yarn tails and hide loose ends.
  • Stitch markers – You might need stitch markers to keep track of which round you’re on. Using stitch markers that can open and close, also called “locking stitch markers”, are perfect to ensure that they never fall off and cause you to lose your count while you work. If you don’t have stitch markers, use a strand of scrap yarn or a thin paper clip—preferably in a bright color so it’s easy to see.
  • Yarn/darning needle – You will need a yarn needle or darning needle to sew in the loose yarn ends.
  • Free loom knitting blanket patterns – Make sure to pick out your favorite loom knitting blanket patterns!

  1. Modular Afghans. You can make modular blankets that are made up of a bunch of smaller pieces sewn together. The Join-As-You-Go Mitered Square Blanket Pattern above is a great example of modular loom knit blankets.

Any type of knitting loom can make fabric for a blanket. The most common shape: round looms, are a great choice because they’re nice and open with plenty of pegs for a range of yarn weights.

2. Knit in one piece! You can use a large loom to make a small to medium-sized blanket in one piece. No seams needed!

The big infinity or Afghan Looms like the one shown above, or the Flexee looms make it possible to cast on and knit an entire blanket. Afghan Knitting Looms are nice and compact which makes it easier to take a project with you on trips. The Flexee looms are adjustable which means you can add as many pegs as you’d like (though they are more awkward to work with for big projects.
