Get your needles ready, we’re knitting socks! As a crafty person, I always love an excuse to fully customize my clothing — including my socks! Most days I want to rock something that no one else has and handknit socks are a great way to bring a touch of DIY to any outfit.
Knit socks are soft and cozy. They’re small projects that can be knit quickly and also a great chance to have some fun with color, pattern and texture. There are plenty of amazing knit socks that you can find at your local big box store but none of them will be quite and cute or satisfying to wear as a pair you’ve made yourself.
The knitting community is filled with thousands of uber-talented designers who have been busy designing tons of awesome knit sock patterns. Today I’ll share a list of my favorite free patterns for knitting socks to get you inspired to cast on your very own pair ASAP!
Everything You Need for Knitting Socks
Knitting socks can be a fun project to work on when you’re on a trip or simply passing the time. But coming up short on materials can quickly ruin your groove. So let’s talk about the important tools and knick knacks you’ll need when knitting socks:
- Knitting needles – Knitting needles are a must-have for knitting socks. You can find the right needle gauge in the beginning of each pattern or on your yarn’s label!
Pro tip: Double pointed needles or DPNs are one of the best needle types to use when working with small circumference projects like socks. These allow you to evenly distribute stitches across multiple needles and allow tons of flexibility when managing your stitches! If you hate wrangling all those knitting needles you can use the magic loop technique and a long circular knitting needle instead.
- Yarn – Make sure to check the pattern to see what yarn weight to use. You can typically find all of the details on your yarn band or in the “suggested yarn” section of your free knit sock pattern. A note about fiber types: Yarns made of wool or wool blends are popular fiber types as they are both breathable and durable! Check for a small amount of nylon in your yarn for extra stretchiness too.
- Scissors – A pair of scissors is another important tool that you will use for all of your knitting projects. You’ll need them to cut the yarn when you’re done!
- Stitch markers – You might need stitch markers to keep track of where you are if you’re following a tricky stitch pattern or when it comes time to turn the heel on a pair of socks. - Yarn/darning needle – You will need a yarn needle or darning needle to sew in the loose ends. These large-eyed needles are also great for duplicate stitching names or extra details onto your newly knitted socks!

Some tips for making the perfect pair of handknit socks:
- Choosing the right yarn. Wool yarns are both cozy and stretchy, two super important characteristics for a pair of well-fitting socks. Choosing a yarn that is designed specifically for socks will ensure they last for years and feel comfy to wear. Look for “superwash” in the name, this means that the yarn has been treated so that it won’t felt or shrink in the wash. Also look for yarns with some nylon in the fiber content so that your new knits have plenty of elastic stretch to hug your feet for a comfortable fit.
- Top-down or toe-up? Socks are knit in one of two ways: either you cast on for the cuff and knit your way down to the toes or visa versa. Toe-up means you can keep on knitting until you run out of yarn. Top-down makes it easy to try them on as you go. Either way, it’s worth trying both techniques out to see which you prefer!
