  • Backwards Loop Cast On

Easy Knitted Headband Pattern for Adults

This pattern is divided into three parts. The first will focus on the cast on and the number of stitches you need for your knit ear warmer.

The second part is the base where you will be knitting the seed stitch.

The cast off, where you will use the basic knit bind off to take you work off your knitting needles.

Finally, you’re going to sew your headband together to make that cute “twisted” and bow-like effect in the middle.

Backwards Loop Cast On

Using the backwards loop cast on, cast on 15 stitches. Remember that the slipknot counts as one stitch.

Seed Stitch Base

For the main section, simply (Knit 1, purl 1), repeat the stitches in the parentheses until the last stitch.

Turn your work and repeat then (K1, p1) until the end…

And that’s it…  literally.

You’ll start seeing these little bumps or “seeds” on your headband as you knit your rows..

You just repeat this row until your headband is long enough to wrap snugly around your head. Mine was about 24” long for some sewing allowance later.

Sewing

Ok! Now we add the twist. Lay your project flat.

Fold the headband in half lengthwise.

Take the two short ends, still folded, and twist one of the short sides 180 degrees so that the open sides of the “u” shape are facing each other.

Layer these ends by sandwiching them together. Now you have four alternating layers like so.

Thread the long yarn tail into your darning needle and use this to whip stitch the ends together.

Make sure to catch all four layers each time you sew.

Work your way from one end to the other and then back again to secure everything.

Weave in any remaining yarn tail.

Turn your piece so that the seam is inside the headband and the twist is facing up. Tadah! You made a nice, tidy twisted headband.
