10 Free Crochet Prayer Shawl Patterns for Spring 2024!

Historically, prayer shawls are often worn during prayer and are designed to be a comforting embrace. These wonderful accessories are much larger than typical everyday shawls and can be made using a wide range of designs.

You don’t need to be someone who worships to use, make, or gift a prayer shawl. Today, prayer shawls are made and worn by people who need comfort and support in both hard and happy times.

Many nursing homes will accept donated prayer shawls for their residents, and they can be a wonderful source of comfort for friends and family during illness, grief, or as a celebration of someone who is on the mend.

Prayer shawl patterns of 2024!

Prayer shawls come in many different shapes and can be made with a variety of material. Some are woven, some knitted, and some are crocheted! This round up will focus on prayer shawl crochet patterns, most of which are also beginner-friendly!

What You Need to Make Crochet Prayer Shawl Patterns

Did you know that all you need for your crochet prayer shawl patterns are the basic materials? Let’s talk about them!

  • Crochet hooks – Make sure to have crochet hooks on hand. You can find the gauge you need listed in the ‘materials’ section of prayer shawl crochet patterns.
  • Yarn – Make sure to check the pattern to see what yarn weight to use. Each pattern should list a recommended brand or weight in the “suggested yarn” section of the prayer shawl pattern you’re following!
  • Scissors – A pair of scissors is another important tool that you will use for all of your crochet projects. You’ll need them to cut the yarn and trim any leftover yarn tails when you’re done!
  • Stitch markers – You might need stitch markers to keep track of where you are if you’re following a stitch pattern. We recommend “removable” or “locking” style stitch markers for crochet projects. If you don’t have stitch markers, you can use a strand of scrap yarn—preferably in a different color so it’s easy to see.
  • Yarn/darning needle – You will need a yarn needle or darning needle to sew in the loose ends.
  • Blocking Mats and Blocking Wires – these optional yet helpful tools give prayer shawl crochet patterns a polished and professional-looking finish. Blocking mats make it easy to pin a project in a specific shape while drying. Blocking wires can be threaded through the edge stitches and create super straight edges. Read to the end for special blocking tips and tricks.

Blocking Prayer Shawl Crochet Patterns

These gorgeous shawls look incredible the moment they’re off the crochet hook but can be absolutely stunning after a good blocking session. Blocking evens these stitches out, allows open stitches to relax, and can soften the yarn in the finished project. It’s the last step and, while it’s tempting to skip it, we really encourage everyone to take the time to block each and every project!

These prayer shawls are extra large which means that blocking them can be quite a chore. They need a lot of flat space to air dry after they’ve finished soaking in a warm water bath.

To simplify this process, we always have a set of blocking mats and wires on hand. These two tools make it easy to block big projects that also need to have straight edges or extra sharp points along the borders. Some brands like Knit Picks will have a blocking kit that comes with wires, pins, combs, and mats. You can also find each of these pieces separately at your local craft stores or Amazon.com too!
