LET’S START KNITTING

Your Lovable Furbaby Deserves a Cozy Sweater Too!

We know that dog sweater knitting patterns are meant to keep your pooches warm and cozy. But let’s be honest, dogs in sweaters are just super cute too!

I remember a mini pinscher my aunt had a few years ago. Her name was Zoe and she always wore the prettiest dresses. Despite her attitude problem and penchant for eating the hair on people’s heads, she was adorable!

This was in high school and I didn’t know how to knit back then. But if I did, I’m sure I would have whipped something up from her…though I’m not sure if it would’ve looked that good.

This image showcases a cute little dog sweater knitting pattern.

But hey, it’s fine if you’re not the Bob Ross of knitting. What matters is that you knit something up from the heart!

If you, like me, want to make an adorable sweater, then you’re in the right place. I’m going to share my list of favorite free dog sweater knitting patterns for you to try out!

How to Knit a Doggy Sweater

Dog sweater knitting patterns come in different difficulty levels. But don’t worry, I’m keeping this list as beginner-friendly as possible!

What You Need to Knit Dog Sweaters

The materials you need to knit a dog sweater will depend on the pattern you choose to follow. Here are the materials that you need to follow a dog sweater knitting pattern:

  • Knitting needles – You need knitting needles to create the dog sweater. Now, your needle size will depend on the yarn. So make sure to check your yarn band!
  • Yarn – You can use any type of yarn for your knitted dog sweater. But you need to consider your pet’s habits, fur, and the season. You wouldn’t want your pooch to wear a chunky sweater in sweltering weather! Try an acrylic yarn to make it super easy and quick to wash in a washing machine.
  • Scissors – A pair of scissors is another important tool that you will use for all of your knitting projects. You’ll need them to cut yarn tails and hide loose ends.
  • Stitch markers – You’ll need stitch markers to keep track of what round you’re on. If you don’t have stitch markers, you can use a strand of scrap yarn or a thin paper clip—preferably in a different color so it’s easy to see.
  • Yarn/darning needle – You will need a yarn needle or darning needle to sew in the loose yarn ends.
  • Dog sweater knitting patterns – Finally, you’ll need a dog sweater pattern to follow. So keep scrolling!
  • Measuring Tape – Before you start knitting you’ll probably need a few measurements from your puppo! Start slow and use a fabric tape measure so the do stays comfy while work.

Thoughts on Dog Sweater Knitting Patterns

Dog sweaters are great ways to accessorize your pooch. Also, some dogs are not bred to live in the brisk cold. Knit sweaters for dogs can be an important way to keep your fur-baby warm during colder days too.

The plus side is that once you’re confident enough with knitting pet clothes, you can knit your own matching sweater too!

  1. Hello, I am a beginner knitter. I did make a couple of cardigans for my grandchildren about 10 years ago, but never worked out how to do button holes, and I couldn’t get the fronts and back to match so knitted it all in one. But basically I’m a beginner. One of my dogs had an excellent dog jumper that was knitted by an extended family member years ago but it got lost at the hospital when he was there. There is no possibility of her making another. It was so good as I could pop it on over his head really quickly to go in the garden, as it had a round hole for his head and round holes for front legs. Nothing fancy. It was striped. I would like to knit another just like it, actually a couple as I have two little dachshunds. I looked at the 10 pictures and think I would like to do something like the pink one but without the hood and ears and make one of them longer under the tummy as she is a girl. No fancy pattern, just plain. Please can you advise. Best wishes, Christine
