Finger Knitting for Beginners

How to knit using just your fingers!

Welcome to Finger Knitting! Whether you’re an experienced traditional knitter or someone curious about this unique and enjoyable craft, you’ve come to the right place.

SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS FINGER KNITTING?

Finger knitting is a delightful and accessible form of knitting that doesn’t require any extra tools. Instead, you use your fingers to create beautiful projects, making it a perfect introduction to the world of knitting for crafty kids, knitting novices and a fun alternative for seasoned knitters too!

Unlike traditional knitting, which uses looped yarn around knitting needles to create fabric, finger knitting ditches the knitting needles, crochet hooks, and knitting looms! With just your hands and some yarn, you can create scarves, headbands, and even large projects like afghans. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to get creative with kids.

FINGER KNITTING Basics…

This super simple craft starts with weaving the yarn around the fingers on one hand and pulling the loops over each other to create fabric. That’s it! Let’s look at all the steps together:

1. Choose Your Yarn: Select a yarn that’s easy to work with. Chunky or bulky yarns are great for beginners as they are easier to handle and produce quicker results. But be careful! Too thick and it won’t be comfortable between your fingers.

2. Choose how many fingers you want to use: Weave the yarn between your fingers, creating loops around each one. Typically, you’ll use four fingers, but you can adjust the number based on the width of your project! Fewer fingers mean narrower projects.

3. Knit the Loops: To make stitches, you’ll be lift the bottom loop over the top loop on each finger, effectively knitting the yarn. Repeat this process, weaving the yarn and lifting the loops, to build your knitted fabric until it’s as long as you want it to be.

4. Binding Off: Binding off takes the project off your fingers and creates a finished edge at the same time!
