Materials You Need for Lace Knitting Patterns

Lace knitting is a fun and fascinating technique that sometimes requires special tools to keep the process smooth and easy. We’ve put together a list of handy dandy tools that can help keep your lace knitting experience a fun one!

  • Knitting needles – You will need a sturdy pair of non-slippery knitting needles. We love wood needles for lace knitting because the material helps keep the stitches on your needles. You can use straight needles for flat projects, but a pair of wooden circular knitting needles might come in handy too!
  • Yarn – Lace can be knit in any weight of yarn! However, many traditional lace patterns use “lace weight yarns”. Make sure to check the pattern to see what yarn weight to use. You can typically find all of the details on your yarn band or in the “suggested yarn” section of your heart knitting pattern.
  • Scissors – A pair of scissors is another important tool that you will use for all of your knitting projects. You’ll need them to cut the yarn when you’re done!
  • Yarn/darning needle – You will need a yarn needle or darning needle to sew in the loose ends.
  • Blocking kits – Lace looks way better when blocked! So make sure to have a few blocking pins or blocking combs ready for when you finish your project.
  • Stitch markers – Lace is one technique that you’ll definitely want to have stitch markers for! Lace knitting has unique stitch patterns that might be difficult to manage without stitch markers. Stitch markers help you keep track of pattern repeats and can mark particularly tricky sections. Opt for the locking-type so you can easily reposition them as you go!
